GRANITE BAY (CBS13) – Approximately 100 people attended a New Year’s Eve party in Granite Bay despite the regional order to stay home, a Placer County Sheriff’s Office spokesman confirmed Sunday.
Spokeswoman Angela Musallam said deputies responded to a noise complaint at a Vista De Lago court mansion in the gated community of Los Lagos, near Lake Folsom, Thursday night. Musallam said no complaints were filed and MPs left once the volume was rejected.
Videos circulating on social media show that the number of people who attended the party could be much higher.
“The more such events occur, it means the longer we have to stay closed to try to limit transmissions,” Dr. Dean Blumberg said. “Such events are detrimental to people’s health and detrimental to the economy.”
Placer County is located in the Greater Sacramento region, which remains under a home stay order due to a drop in ICU capacity throughout the region, as coronavirus cases continue to rise.
The region submitted to the order three weeks ago, as the capacity of the ICU dropped by 15%, and the order was to remain in force for three weeks if that number improves. However, Saturday’s projections prompted officials to maintain the current order for now, as a planned rise resulting from the holidays is expected.
Dr. Blumberg, an infectious disease specialist at UC Davis, believes the implications of the celebration could have a widespread impact.
“If there are more than 100 people, we know the transmission speed is relatively high, we know that at least five or ten of them were able to transmit,” Blumberg said.
“People need to start making better decisions. I personally wouldn’t have gone to a party with ten people, ”said Rhonda Williams, a Placer County resident.
On Monday, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg took to Twitter to criticize the party.

Sacramento social media influencer Zayn Silmi apologized Monday for going to the party after being seen in online videos.

The state saw an increase in cases and deaths just two weeks after Thanksgiving. Based on the projection models of the University of Washington, on January 14 we could see an increase of almost 19% and almost 24% in deaths.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers tripled than they are now, because people just don’t want to be taken seriously enough, I guess,” Joey Montero said.
Placer County Public Health now advises people who went to the party or gathered on New Year’s Eve to get tested and stay home.
“It’s unfortunate because it’s going to affect a lot of people, but it’s what it is and we can’t really change what happened,” Williams said.
Placer County Interim Health Officer Dr. Rob Oldham, issued the following statement about the event:
“Public health has been informed of this event. With this and any other encounters that may have occurred during the holidays, we encourage participants to try and stay at home and away from others as much as possible.
If a person attending a large meeting had to test positive and was considered infectious over a period of time, contact tracking would attempt to identify a nearby contact list and a notification would occur. Tracking contacts is more difficult if contacts are geographically distributed and may also be hampered by a willingness to participate along with a high level of community transmission. ”
