In his first Late Show New Year’s monologue Stephen Colbert took part in President Donald Trump’s not-so-perfect phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
“Happy New Year! 2020 is over!” Colbert began. “All this evil is behind us and we start again … with a furious pandemic and a president trying to steal the election. It turns out that in 2020 it drops some additional tracks. “
This quickly led him to this “amazing” phone call, which urged viewers to “fold” for what he described as “whether Watergate and the Ukraine scandal had a baby they did on the bus. ‘Access Hollywood.’
After playing the clip in which Trump said he only wants Georgia to “find” 11,780 votes, Colbert responded, “That’s all he wants! He just wants them to find exactly how many votes he needs to win for one. There is nothing heavy! ”
“If you want to steal an election, it really should sound less like your grandfather complaining about his phone,” the host added. “‘Before there was a button at the bottom, now he uses my face. Later, during his interview with Stacey Abrams on Tuesday’s runoff in the Senate, Colbert asked him what he did about the fact that his name appeared several times during Trump’s call, including Trump’s suggestion that he “laugh” at Raffensperger.
“I think it’s a little exaggerated to say I’m thinking about them,” Abrams told him. “I am just trying to win this election. They are not my problem “.
