New York – Amazon bought 11 planes from the airlines Delta i WestJet to increase its fleet and be able to bring products to consumers faster.
On its blog, the company reported Tuesday that it is the first time it has purchased aircraft for its shipping network. For the past two years, Amazon has leased aircraft for this purpose.
“Having a combination of leased and own aircraft will allow us to better manage our operations,” said Amazon Global Air Vice President Sarah Rhoads.
The company has turned its back on trying to ship its own packages and relying less on postal service or shipping companies like UPS. Apart from its fleet of aircraft, the company has delivery centers at airports, has built warehouses near residential areas and has started a program whereby third parties can ship their products using vans painted with the Amazon logo.
The 11 aircraft, all Boeing 767-300s, will be conditioned to carry cargo instead of passengers, the company said.
The four that WestJet will buy from it will be incorporated into the corporate fleet this year, and the seven from Delta will be next year. In total, by 2022, the company will have 85 aircraft.
Amazon.com Inc. declined to disclose how much it paid for the aircraft.
