Los Angeles County Approves Hero Pay for Grocery Workers and Relief for Tenants

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday on several measures to provide economic relief during the pandemic, including the “hero pay” for grocery store workers and the extended protection for tenants.

The hero’s pay measure would require large grocery chains and drug retailers to provide an extra $ 5 per hour to front-line workers in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

The board voted 4-0 to request the drafting of the ordinance on the payment of heroes, with final approval possible as early as January 26th. If passed, the ordinance on the payment of heroes would remain in force for 120 days.

The measure applies to employers who are listed on the stock exchange or have at least 300 employees nationwide and more than 10 employees per store.

Although the measure applies to unincorporated areas in the county (approximately 1 million residents of a county population of 10 million), the board asked county councilors to investigate whether it could also be applied to the rest of the county. county.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear the importance of industries that are considered essential, including grocery and drug store employees,” said supervisor Hilda Solis, who co-authored the motion. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, these workers have continued to show up at their workplace despite the danger of being exposed to COVID-19.”

The board also offered new assistance to tenants by expanding and expanding an income relief program and extending the moratorium on evictions.

The rent relief measure has been extended for a full year, until the end of 2021.

Supervisor Janice Hahn says hundreds of thousands of county residents are struggling to pay their rent.

Officials say some tenants even take out loans from predatory lenders or use credit cards to pay their landlords.

The program, which depends on federal funding, will also raise available assistance from $ 7,500 to $ 10,000 for eligible households that account for up to 50% of the median income.

Supervisors also approved a measure to extend the eviction moratorium until the end of February.
