Maduro takes control of the National Assembly today

After the legislative elections that allowed him to regain control of the only independent body in the country, President Nicolás Maduro will have a clear path from Tuesday to further consolidate his power, while the opposition is forced to attract Venezuelans tired of politics after boycotting the election that virtually erased them from the scene.

After the legislative elections of December 6, “we can say that the opposition no longer occupies any relevance in the institutions, at least effective, de facto, that the state has in Venezuela,” said Oscar Vallès, political analyst and professor at the Metropolitan University in Caracas.

Nor did the outgoing National Assembly – headed by opposition leader Juan Guaidó – which has promised to continue in office “have any relevance, no impact, no weight for the common citizen,” said Vallès.
