The Organization of American States on Wednesday condemned the protests by supporters of US President Donald Trump in Congress.
“The General Secretariat of the OAS condemns and repudiates the attack on the institutions which is being perpetrated today in the United States by protesters who are unaware of the recent election results, “read part of the entity’s statement.
He also lamented the violent tactics with which protesters have expressed their disagreement with the results of the US presidential election.
“The exercise of force and vandalism against institutions constitutes a serious attack against democratic functioning, “the OAS stressed.
He also urged that calm prevail so that legislators can conclude with the corresponding electoral and institutional processes.
The Capitol, as the building that houses the two chambers of Congress is known, was evacuated this afternoon while supporters of the U.S. president occupied the vicinity of the site, questioning Trump’s electoral defeat.
Police ordered staff to leave the Cannon building and other offices flanking the Capitol after Trump asked his supporters to protest against the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the Nov. 3 election, which takes place this afternoon in a joint session of Congress.
However, after the protests intensified Trump urged those present to do so peacefully and avoid clashes with police officers.
“Please support the Capitol Police and law enforcement,” Trump said on Twitter more than an hour after protesters broke the security cordon. “They are truly on the side of our country. ‘Keep peaceful!’
