Four thousand Americans died of COVID-19 on Thursday, the worst pandemic day to date

For the first time during the coronavirus pandemic, the United States has recorded more than 4,000 virus-related deaths in one day. It is the third day in a row that the country has surpassed its own deaths in a single day; this time, 4,085 Americans lost their lives in just 24 hours, according to pandemic tracker figures from Johns Hopkins University. By comparison, several countries, such as Japan, Australia and South Korea, have recorded far fewer than 4,000 deaths during the entire pandemic. On the same day, an additional 274,703 cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the US as the pandemic accelerates across the country. In Arizona, one in 119 people tested positive this week and turned the state into what health officials have called the latest “hot spot in the world” for the virus.
