Earlier this week, Twitch removed its extremely popular Pogchamp emoticon, which is used to express emotion in the chat, after the face of the emot, Ryan “Gootecks” Gutiérrez, encouraged “civil unrest” after the insurrection in the Capitol building. Now, just two days later, he has replaced Gutierrez’s resemblance with an elaborate plan that is honestLetters meaning: quite a few poggers.
Today on Twitter, Twitch announced how it will handle the Pogchamp emote from now on.
“You know what? In the spirit of figuring out 2021 together, let’s shoot with him for now!” The company wrote. “Get ready for a new Pogchamp every 24 hours, starting today.”
The current Pogchamp is the expert in fighting games Kenny “UnRoolie” McWild, who he previously threw his hat into the ring to be Pogchamp’s de facto replacement. Tomorrow may be anyone, but I guess there will probably be someone who has already volunteered on Twitter.
Pogchamp’s rotating idea was originally suggested by longtime gaming personality Sean “Day9” Plott shortly after Twitch removed the original Pogchamp emot.

It’s not hard to see why Twitch liked the idea – if he selected a single individual to be Pogchamp’s new face, this streamer would almost certainly have faced harassment and other unwanted forms of attention. That way, the Sauron’s Eye of the Dickheads harassment should at least look around a lot instead of focusing its fury on one place. Still, that won’t necessarily stop people from going after the streamer of the day and opening up new possibilities, like Twitch that gives focus to a streamer that turns out to have a problematic story. Still, this is new territory, so it’s not known how it will really end. Maybe it’s the most pog part of all.
