It has been almost two years since the arrival of Avengers: Endgame, the film that saw writers and directors Joe and Anthony Russo land — usually acclaimed — the end of a story that they and many others had spent most of a decade, unprecedented hours of human creativity and huge, boiling pans of money saying. By any metric, it was a professional achievement that is probably a little worrisome when you would still want, you know, to continue to have a career.
Now, after an extremely explainable short break, the Russians are back with Apple TV + launching today the first teaser of his first film since End of the game wrapped, an adaptation of Nico Walker’s 2018 detective novel Cherry. But while many of the features of the Russian style are seemingly absent from the short (strangely truncated) clip — with a magic glove or an important rock in sight — they have a familiar face in hand. (And a slightly less familiar haircut.)
Yes, this is Tom Holland as a young man who enlisted in the U.S. Army, a career option that will presumably keep him in good health; wait, no, come on, we took a look at the Wikipedia summary of the book and it definitely won’t. In any case, it’s interesting as always to see Holland play against the guy (as he did last year, with Antonio Campos The devil all the time.) From the mockery, it’s a little hard to pinpoint the tone of the film, but we’ll probably see more of it as the film’s release date for 2021 approaches.
