It is part of an expansion of its vaccine distribution program. Leaders said that due to limited supply, scheduling information will be communicated directly to those eligible through a randomization process.
Gov. Ron DeSantis made seniors receiving the vaccine the focus of his Bay County press conference on Sunday morning.
“Putting the elderly first, we are doing the right thing for our parents and grandparents. It is morally correct, it is also medically correct. It is based on the data, the fact is, this virus has been more deadly to the elderly.” , said DeSantis.
He spoke at a Bay County seniors care center, explaining why seniors need to be prioritized.
“This virus has been more deadly to the elderly than middle age, so focusing on those over 65 is the best thing we can do to reduce morbidity and mortality,” DeSantis said.
Florida Department of Health statistics show that more than 235,000 seniors have already received their first dose. Of these, 133,000 are between 65 and 74 years old.
DeSantis said he and other officials expect next week that the state will get 250,000 more vaccines and that it is working with hospitals, Publix and other places to administer them.
“We know who does it right, we know where to put the vaccine,” DeSantis said.
