World Health Organization officials hold a press conference on the coronavirus pandemic on Monday as more countries report cases of new contagious virus mutations.
Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases said Sunday it found a new variant of the coronavirus in four passengers arriving from Brazil. The institute said the new strain appears to have some of the same qualities, such as increased infectivity, as other variations discovered in the UK and South Africa.
Meanwhile, the United States has found at least 63 cases of Covid-19 with the new most contagious strain of the virus first identified in the UK, known as B.1.1.7, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Friday. . The variant does not appear to worsen patients or increase the risk of death, health officials said.
The coronavirus has infected more than 90.4 million people worldwide and killed at least 1.9 million people, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.
