Gov. Greg Abbott will report on the distribution of the Texas COVID-19 vaccine

SAINT ANTHONY – Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday will provide an update on the state distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Texas.

Abbott is expected to speak during a noon press conference at the Arlington Expo Center, one of the state’s massive COVID-19 vaccination sites. The press conference will be played live in this article, but there may be delays. If no live broadcast is available, please check back later.

The head of the Texas Emergency Management Division, Nim Kidd, Texas State Department of Health Commissioner John Hellerstedt and Texas Health Resources CEO Barclay E. Berdan will also attend.

This week, 28 center providers in Texas are expected to receive more than 158,000 doses of the vaccine. A total of 19,725 doses will go to two centers in Bexar County: 9,000 Modern vaccines will go to the metropolitan health district and 10,725 doses of Pfizer will go to the University Health, according to the state.

The city of San Antonio will begin administering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to those who are eligible starting this week at the Alamodome. It will be in operation throughout the week, but the registration to receive the vaccine was filled in a matter of minutes when it opened on Saturday.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff wrote a letter to Abbott on Sunday calling for more COVID-19 vaccines for Bexar County “as soon as possible.”

Another 38,300 doses will go to other providers, including hospitals and clinics, across Texas. Click here to see Week 5 vaccine assignments in the state.

Texas currently vaccinates health care workers, people 65 and older, and those with medical conditions that pose a higher risk of hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

As of Sunday, the state’s death toll exceeds 30,000 people and the number of hospitalizations due to coronavirus is steadily rising.

Johns Hopkins says that in the past two weeks, the average number of new daily cases in Texas has increased by 9,363.7, an increase of 76.9%.
