The FDA expands the withdrawal of Sportmix pet food from Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. after the death of 70 pets

NEW YORK – The FDA is expanding the withdrawal of dry pet food after more than 70 pets have died and dozens more have fallen ill.

Pet food maker Sportmix first recalled some products last month after it was discovered it may contain deadly levels of one type of mold.

As of Monday, the FDA said it is aware of more than 70 pets that have died and more than 80 that have become ill after eating Sportmix pet food.

The FDA says not all cases have been officially confirmed as aflatoxin poisoning through laboratory testing or review of veterinary records.

But now the company is adding corn-containing products to the list of withdrawals.

Some of the reported symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and diarrhea. In some cases, pets may suffer liver damage, but have no other symptoms.

Pet owners should stop feeding products removed from their pets and consult their veterinarian, especially if their pet shows any signs of illness.
