Hiken Hossam and Mawada Eladhm, influential Tiktok, acquitted after charges of “violation of family values” in Egypt

Mawada Eladhm, who is about 20 years old, had 3.1 million followers on TikTok and 1.6 million followers on Instagram and gained fame for posting lip and dance sync videos.

“The charges are being drafted very vaguely,” his lawyer Ahmed Bahkiry told the BBC after the initial verdict was announced last year. “Prison can’t be a solution, even if some of your videos go against our social norms and traditions.”

Haneen Hossam, a college student in archeology, had 1.2 million followers on TikTok and was arrested a few days after posting a video encouraging women to post live videos and talk to strangers through the small video-sharing platform Like.

He has denied the charges and said his videos have been taken out of context.

Hossam’s lawyer, Mahmmed Sammer, told local media Youm7 that his mother fainted at the news of the acquittal, while Hossam and Eladhm shouted for joy.

Eladhm’s father, Fathy Rashad, told reporters after the court that his daughter had been “devastated by oppression and sadness” and would need psychological treatment, Youm7 reported.

The other three defendants had been accused of helping one of the girls evade arrest, hiding evidence of the crime and publishing materials to influence public opinion on the case. One was also accused of possessing illegal software to facilitate activity on social media.
