At least three people have been killed and 24 injured after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the country’s news agency said on Friday.
The epicenter was reported six kilometers northeast of the city of Majene, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Several thousand panicked residents fled their homes to seek safety after the quake, which did not trigger a tsunami warning, but was felt strongly for about seven seconds, according to the statement.
The disaster mitigation agency said a hotel and the West Sulawesi governor’s office were severely damaged and the electricity supply was damaged.
Hours earlier, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook the district on Thursday and damaged several homes.
Riding between the “ring of fire” of the Pacific, Indonesia, a nation with high tectonic activity, is regularly affected by earthquakes.
In 2018, a devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck the city of Palu in Sulawesi, killing thousands.
