In its latest edition, the magazine Science, Of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), dedicated its cover to the collapsed radio telescope of the Arecibo Observatory.
The report included in the magazine highlights the successes of the radio telescope, which he describes as a “fallen giant” and its possible reconstruction, after its platform fell on December 1, the magazine pointed out.
He also stressed that despite celebrating 57 years since its creation, the facility was a pioneer in science and that its loss surprised the scientific community internationally.
After months of deterioration due to structural failures in its support cables, the radio telescope collapsed. Puerto Rico Nasa Space Grant Director Gerardo Morell has estimated that its reconstruction would cost $ 400 million.
Prior to its collapse, the National Science Foundation (NSF) made the decision to demolish the radio telescope in part due to structural damage. The plan focused on preserving the parts of the Observatory that were not affected.
