Nestlé Prepared Foods has released a reminder of its hot pepperoni bags about the potential for contamination by “foreign materials,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Friday.
The company recalls the popular product because of reports that there are pieces of plastic and glass in some hot pockets.
The FSIS received four reports from customers alleging that they had found the materials in the hot pocket, which resulted in the removal of approximately 762,615 pounds of unprepared items.
So far, only a “minor injury” related to the pollution has been reported, but FSIS encourages consumers who have purchased the product to be careful and avoid consuming it.
“This product must be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the FSIS wrote.
The products in question were produced between November 13, 2020 and November 16, 2020 and shipped to retailers across the country, according to FSIS.
Consumers are advised to look for hot pockets with a label that says “BRAND SANDWICHES HOT POCKETS: PREMIUM PEPPERONI MADE WITH BUTTER BARK IN CHICKEN AND VEAL PIZZA GARLIC”, with the best use before the February date of 2022.
FSIS has classified contaminated hot pockets as a class I high-risk problem and urges consumers to seek medical attention if they come in contact with the product.
Nestlé Prepared Foods, which acquired Hot Pockets in 2002, could not be contacted immediately for comment.
