The weight depreciated against a strength of the dollar prior to the takeover of Joe Biden as president of United States this week and amid growing cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes covid-19 disease, although the Chinese economy recovered faster than expected in the fourth quarter of 2020.
How is the exchange rate going?
Base Bank explained in a report that the weight starts the session with a depreciation just like other currencies, because there is more caution among market participants due to the following factors:
First. The Joe Biden administration will begin in two days, so there are doubts that Congress will be able to quickly pass the stimulus package proposed last week, as full Democratic support in the Senate is required.
“It is normal to be cautious in the days leading up to a change of government, so that the depreciation of the peso at the beginning of the week does not necessarily indicate the beginning of an upward trend in the exchange rate, “he said.
Second. The covid-19 pandemic continues to pose a threat to the global economic recovery, so the optimism of the financial markets in previous weeks was based on the availability and initial distribution of vaccines and, therefore, on the expectation that they will allow the pandemic to come to an end. Coronavirus cases worldwide exceeded 95 million, the United States remains the country with the highest number of reported infections, followed by India, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom.
