DALLAS – Texas reported Monday more than 10,000 new cases of COVID-19 and 46 more deaths from the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
The number of jeans hospitalized with COVID-19 increased from Sunday to 13,858 on Monday. Coronavirus hospitalizations remain close to their historical record and intensive care units in several regions have or almost have their capacity, according to the Texas State Department of Health Services.
The department reported 10,110 more confirmed cases of the virus on Monday, as well as 695 probable cases.
Over the past week, more than 17% of coronavirus tests have returned positive in Texas, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The state has recorded more than 2 million cases of the virus and more than 32,000 deaths.
The actual number of cases is believed to be much higher because many people have not been tested and some who get sick show no symptoms.
More than a million Texans have received a dose of a coronavirus vaccine and more than 166,000 are fully vaccinated, according to health officials.
For most people, coronavirus causes mild to moderate symptoms that clear up in a few weeks. But for other people, especially the elderly and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause serious illness and be fatal.
