A series of aftershocks followed throughout the country. A magnitude 5.0 aftershock affected 27 kilometers (16.8 miles) south-southwest of Nueve de Julio, about 1,000 km (620 miles) east of the first earthquake and nearly 20 minutes later.
Then, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake shook the same area as the first, followed by a magnitude 5.3 aftershock.
Earthquakes of magnitude 4.9, 5.0 and 5.3 are considered aftershocks, as they are of smaller magnitude than the main earthquake and in the same area.
According to available data, there are no tsunami threats at this time, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
In its preliminary statement, the PTWC recorded the depth of the quake at about 20 kilometers (12.43 miles).
It was a “strong” earthquake, said Agostina Montaño, a CNN journalist on Espanyol in San Juan, and added that everything fell off the shelves of her home.
This is a story in development, more to come.
