At the start of the NFL’s new league year, in March, Green Bay Packers runners-up Aaron Jones will become an unrestricted free agent, assuming he doesn’t sign again temporarily.
With an expiring contract, Jones is in a precarious situation with the Packers into the offseason, though he appears to have had at least one legitimate chance to re-sign with the team before.
According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Packers offered Jones a contract extension that would have made him one of the top five highest-paid runners in the NFL on average each year.
By that metric, the contract would have given Jones an average of at least $ 12.5 million per season, per OverTheCap.
Jones ’representation eventually declined Green Bay’s offer because they lacked“ big money guaranteed, ”according to Demovsky. Jones later separated from his former agent and has since hired Drew Rosenhaus.
Jones, who was selected in the fifth round in 2017, has played all four seasons under his rookie contract.
The Packers star finished fourth in the NFL by rushing this season (1,104 yards) and was named to her first Pro Bowl.
They can argue for or against re-signing Jones, especially when you consider the current situation of the Packers ’salary cap.
Recovering Jones could mean the difference between cutting certain veterans or re-signing other key collaborators like All-Pro center Corey Linsley. In addition, the Packers have a promising young rookie runner AJ Dillon, who seems more than capable of handling a full workload.
One thing is clear, however, Jones is one of Green Bay’s most versatile weapons on offense and one of the locker room favorites. The Packers front office will have an extremely difficult decision to make regarding Jones ’future this offseason.
