3 soldiers killed after New York National Guard helicopter crash in Mendon, officials say

MENDON, New York (WABC) – Several soldiers were killed Wednesday in a helicopter crash in upstate New York, officials said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says a New York National Guard UH-60 medical evacuation helicopter carrying three soldiers crashed into an open field near West Bloomfield Road in Mendon, New York. York.

Monroe County officials say they received calls for a plane in distress around 6:30 p.m.

Rescue teams found a Blackhawk of the New York National Guard. They say the plane was completely on fire when the crews arrived on the scene.

Officials say the three soldiers, who are believed to have been members of the New York National Guard, were killed.

The New York National Guard heads to the scene to investigate. The FAA will also investigate the incident.

According to 911 reports, officials say the plane was flying very low and the engine was reported to be bubbling.

Officials say there are remnants the size of some islands in the city

The New York National Guard says the helicopter was located at the Army Aviation Support Facility at Rochester International Airport and crashed while on a routine training mission.

They are working to identify the soldiers who were on board.

The aircraft was assigned to Company C of the first battalion.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he was devastated by the crash and will fly flags to all state buildings Thursday.

West Bloomfield Road between Cheese Factory Road and Boughton Hill Road was closed during the investigation.
