Jennifer Lopez addresses the nation in Spanish during the opening performance

Jennifer Lopez took to the opening stage to perform a combination of patriotic songs, and it took her a while to slip into one of her own hits and address the nation in Spanish.

Lopez began her performance with “This Land is Your Land,” moving on to “America the Beautiful.” Then Lopez spoke in Spanish.

“One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” she said, reciting part of the Pledge of Allegiance: “One nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”

López, who is Puerto Rican, has several Latin albums and often sings in Spanish. During last year’s Super Bowl break program, Lopez and his fellow headliner Shakira celebrated their cultures by singing and dancing, representing Hispanic Americans. Lopez also brought to light Colombian singer J Balvin and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny.

Lopez’s inaugural performances were reminiscent of her Super Bowl show, when she slipped into her 2000 hit “Let’s Get Loud,” which she also sang during the halfway point with her daughter, Emme Muñiz.

Many fans on Twitter they were proud Lopez took a moment to add his own style and recite part of the promise in Spanish. “We were watching the opening and @JLo he spoke Spanish. One of the students in my class says “I know what he said !!” That’s why representation is important! ” a teacher tweeted.

“Jennifer Lopez said that part of the promise of fidelity in Spanish … Amazing. So wonderfully appropriate,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Yeah, it was, I’m Puerto Rican and I can’t stop the tears,” another replied.
