A failed drug trafficking operation caused banana shipments with cocaine to be accidentally sent to Canadian grocery stores, authorities reported.
Kelowna police said Tuesday that 21 kilograms of cocaine were shipped from Colombia as part of the failed drug deal, Global News reported.
“Our research leads us to believe that these illicit drugs were not intended to end up in the center of Okanagan and came here in the Okanagan Valley as a result of a lost catch at some point along the way,” he said Jeff Carroll, an officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police of Kelowna.
The discovery was originally made by workers at a Kelowna grocery store who found 12 packets of cocaine hidden under a banana container in February 2019.
Later that day, another grocery store owner contacted authorities to also discover the drug at the fruit delivery.
Police confiscated the two shipments of cocaine, which they estimate exceeded 800,000 doses, and began an international investigation.
