After the multi-sectoral claim, the governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia to declare a state of emergency for gender violence in Puerto Rico this Sunday.
“All violence is repudiable, and we must fight relentlessly. Gender-based violence is a social evil, based on ignorance and attitudes that cannot have space or tolerance in the Puerto Rico we aspire to. For too long vulnerable victims have suffered the consequences of systematic masculinity, iniquity, discrimination, lack of education, lack of guidance and above all lack of action. It is my duty and my commitment as governor to establish a stop to gender violence and to that end, I have declared a state of emergency, “the governor said in a press release.
According to the chief executive, the executive order designates “a compliance officer, who will be accountable to the governor, to oversee, monitor and monitor the implementation of the Order. In addition, it creates the Prevention, Support, Rescue Committee and Gender Violence Education (PARE Committee) which appoints 17 members and increases to three the representation of organizations dedicated to providing services and combating gender-based violence. This Committee will be chaired by the Secretary of the Family, Carmen González Magaz, that owns a masters and doctorate of the University Carlos Albizu, being its boarding school and doctoral thesis in gender violence “.
The governor also ordered the creation of a mobile phone app to help victims of gender-based violence seek emergency help by hiding the message sent to protect the victim from their abuser.
The order also states that each agency in coordination with the Office of Management and Budget (OGP) must identify the internal resources, state and federal funds, external available to comply with the provisions of the Executive Order, and if necessary, request additional funds to manage the declared emergency.
