Henry James, strange romance and ghosts. These are the DNA of Haunting of Bly Manor, and are the subject of this great (if long) video essay.

Ladyknightthebrave does fascinating and detailed video essays that delve into the workings of the stand pieces. His latest is an essay on the Netflix program A Haunting of Bly Manor, exploring the workings of death and memory in the show, exploring its influences and thinking through its themes. Interestingly, it also includes a new interview with show creator Mike Flanagan, which offers a compelling insight into the show’s production and its thematic commitments.

This essay, in particular, does a great job in production details and the background in a longer, more detailed reading of the series. As a follow-up to Haunting of Hill House, is a fascinating series and Ladyknight effectively breaks it down. It also has a lot of good information about Henry James, which is good for those of us who didn’t address the horror of the 19th century before the show began.

I like to see up close how a story works he says to himself, and that’s really good. It’s good to throw in for a lazy weekend. You will learn something.
