Americans are definitely not united that question.
According to a new poll released Sunday, only one in five Americans has “much confidence” in President Biden’s ability to meet his goal of unifying the country.
While 22% said Biden would unify the country, 24% remained very skeptical and said they had no confidence “at all” that they could do so, according to the ABC News / Ipsos poll.
Thirty-five percent said they had a “good amount” of trust that Biden could unite the country and 19 percent said they didn’t have as much confidence.
Respondents to the poll were asked for their opinion after watching a video of Biden’s inaugural speech urging Americans to see themselves “not as adversaries, but as neighbors.”
“We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop screaming and lower the temperature. Because without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury. No progress, just exhausting indignation. No nation, just a state of chaos, “Biden said.
At the same time, 71 percent of those who watched all or part of Biden’s inaugural speech said his message was “very” or “a little” compelling.
Another 29 percent who saw it found it “not so convincing” or “not at all convincing.”
The survey examined a random sample of 504 adults nationwide between Jan. 22 and 23.
It has a margin of error plus / minus 5.0 percentage points.
