TORONTO – Star gardener George Springer yesterday formalized his six-year, $ 150 million contract with the Toronto Tiles, for being the most prominent free agent to reach an agreement during this inter-campaign recess.
Springer, who turned 31 in September, got the biggest deal in Tile history. The previous record was Vernon Wells, who signed with Toronto in 2006 for seven years and $ 126 million.
To stamp his signature on the agreement, Springer obtained a $ 10 million bond, which will be paid within 30 days. He will earn $ 22 million in salaries this year, $ 28 million in 2022 and $ 22,500,000 in each of the last four seasons.
The contract includes a provision that limits exchanges. Springer will be able to define each year a list of eight teams to which it could not be assigned without their consent.
You will also get a hotel suite during the tours.
The ranger will get $ 150,000 bonuses if he is named the Most Valuable Player, 125,000 to finish second in the vote, 100,000 to finish third, 75,000 to finish fourth and 50,000 to finish fifth.
He would receive $ 50,000 each time he is selected for the All-Star Game, if he is the Most Valuable Player in the World Series, if he wins a Golden Glove, or if he is awarded the Silver Bat. He would also win 25,000 if he is named the Most Valuable Player in the Championship Series.
“When you hire a guy like George Springer, we all think, ‘Perfect, amazing,'” said Kirby Yates, Toronto’s new Tiles pitcher. It’s just exciting to be part of a team that is really trying to get to the next level. “
Three times selected in the All-Star Game, Springer had spent his seven-year career with Houston. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the 2017 World Series, when the Stars defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers by a maximum of seven duels and achieved the only scepter in their history.
Springer batted 265, with 14 homers and 32 RBIs during the 2020 campaign, shortened by the pandemic. He received a prorated salary of 7,777,778, instead of the $ 21 million originally planned.
For life, Springer has an average of 270, with 174 runs scored and 48 produced. In 2019, he reached the best figures of his career, with 39 home runs and 96 tows.
Springer will join a young core of the Tiles, which includes Bo Bichette and Dominican Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Toronto had a 32-28 mark the previous season and finished third in the Eastern Division of the American League, behind Tampa Bay and the New York Yankees.
The Tiles reached the postseason and were swept 2-0 in the first round by the Rays.
