Houston’s first COVID-19 vaccine opens

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – In the context of a milestone in the city’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner offered a historic smile and a reminder of the terrible need on Monday to expand vaccines to high-risk residents.

The 3,039 new cases reported by Turner are the most recorded in a single day in the city during the pandemic.

However, the statistics include some conditions. According to Turner, the number comes from a case adjustment from the last three days.

However, to date, the city has accounted for more than 148,500 cases of coronavirus. Houston’s positivity rate stands at 17%.

First vaccination site to drive in the city

With a numerical reminder of the impact of the virus on the city, Turner and other city leaders inaugurated Houston’s first vaccination site at Del Mar Stadium, where 1,600 doses of the Modern vaccine were allocated.

Turner added that the Houston Department of Health received an additional 9,000 doses last Friday.

“Our job to vaccinate as many people as possible (is) depending on supply. I know there’s a lot of anxiety in the community because people are worried that they can’t make an appointment. We know demand is higher than “Vaccine supply,” Turner said.

The drive-thru site is in collaboration with United Memorial Medical Center. People considered in high-risk phases 1A and 1B qualified for vaccinations by appointment.

“As we receive more vaccines, we will expand partnerships with federally qualified pharmacies and health centers to ensure the vaccine is available to the most vulnerable communities, and we will deploy mobile strike equipment as needed,” Turner added.
