Senator Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat who would preside over the upcoming trial of former President Donald Trump, was taken Tuesday to a Washington hospital, his spokesman said.
“Tonight, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well,” his spokesman David Carle said in a written statement.
“The attending physician examined him at the Capitol,” Carle said.
“With great caution, the attending physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now and where he is being evaluated.”
Leahy, 80, is the pro tempore president of the Senate, making him responsible for presiding over this chamber in the absence of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Leahy’s state in the Senate also places him in third place by order of the presidential succession, after Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
The House accused Trump earlier this month of inciting riots by his supporters at the Capitol complex on Jan. 6. Thousands of members of a crowd invaded Congress halls, breaking windows and smashing offices.
Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died as a result of the riot.
The crowd interrupted a joint session of Congress, confirming the election of Joe Biden as president.
