The Green Bay Packers will have a new leader of their special teams in 2021.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Matt LaFleur and the Packers are separating from special teams coordinator Shawn Mennenga.
LaFleur initially hired Mennenga when he built his first coaching staff with the Packers in 2019. For the past two seasons, the Packers ranked 26th and 29th in the NFL in Rick Gosselin’s annual special teams ranking.
This season, the Packers ’special teams were responsible for numerous errors and big plays, including two point-return touchdowns, a blocked point, and an early playback recovery. They also had one of the worst return units in the NFL in both kicks and kicks.
Mennenga replaced Ron Zook, who was the final coordinator of Mike McCarthy’s special teams. The Packers were ranked 32nd in special teams before Mennenga’s arrival.
