Of the three throwing prospects for the right, the Mets acquired Wednesday night from the Toronto Blue Jays for the left Steven Matz, two have already appeared in the major.
Here’s a synopsis of each of the three players the Mets can use to gain more organizational depth in 2021:
Sean-Reid Foley, 25
Writing: 2014, second round
Reid-Foley came through the Blue Jays organization as a starting pitcher, and the Florida native made 13 outings at the big league level in 2018-19 with an ERA of 4.71. He had a better performance in five appearances outside the Toronto Bullring in 2020, allowing a career-winning three hits in 6 2/3 innings (1.35 ERA), albeit with as many marches as attacks (six each). According to MLB.com, it mainly throws fast four-seam balls (63 percent) and sliders (41 percent), with a fast average of 94.4 miles per hour and surpassing 96.8 mph.
Yennsy Diaz, 24
Signed: International Free Agent, 2014
Diaz comes in as the trio’s top-ranked prospect, ranked 26th best in Toronto in 2020, according to MLB Pipeline. He made his Major League debut with the Jays with a relief appearance in August 2019, allowing two runs won in two-thirds of an inning against the Baltimore Orioles. Dominican Diaz won 11-9 with a 3.74 ERA in 144 innings with 116 stops in 26 games (24 starts) for Double-A New Hampshire in 2019.
Josh Winckowski, 22 years old
Writing: 15th round, 2016
Winckowski earned a ranking below Diaz (27th) on MLB.com’s Toronto prospect list in 2020, but the Florida native appears to be the furthest from throwing the Mets. Winckowski has not thrown above the A ball since he was retired from high school, although he has posted an ERA of 3.35 with 237 stops in 263 innings thrown over four minor league seasons. Winckowski won 10-8 with an ERA of 2.69 over 127 combined 1/3 entries from Single-A Dunedin and Single-A Lansing in 2019.
