Coach notes: Pack, Rathman, McCardell

He Packers they are making a change in special equipment. They are firing the ST coordinator Shawn Mennenga, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter). Formerly a college coach, Mennenga had previously been an assistant coach at Browns ST before joining. Matt LaFleurthe 2019 staff. The Packers are expected to promote the ST assistant coach Maurice Drayton replacing Mennenga, Pelissero tweets. At least one other team was interested in Drayton for that role, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Drayton was in contention for this job two years ago.

  • Mike Pettine he may not be locked out as the Packers ’defensive coordinator next season. The DC veteran chose not to sign an extension last year and ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky notes his contract has ended. The Packers invested heavily in their pitching run and used three first-round picks in the 2018-19 defenders, but fell from 15th in defensive DVOA in 2019 to 17th last season. Pettine is one of the remains of Mike McCarthystaff, having arrived in 2018.
  • Colts runner coach Tom Rathman announced his retirement on Thursday. The Colts hired Rathman in 2017, after he ended his eight-year tenure as coach of the 49ers. Rathman tried to retire in 2019 and 20, but the Colts successfully pressured him to stay, according to Stephen Holder of The Athletic (on Twitter). A defensive back who won two Super Bowls with the 49ers, Rathman coached the 1997-2020 runners. Sixteen of those years came to San Francisco.
  • Staying with the Colts, they hire the former Jaguars QBs coach Scott Milanovich to replace Marcus Brady in this position, Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star tweets. Milanovich was the coach of Jacksonville QBs between 2017 and 1919. Otherwise, he has spent his career in the CFL, having coached the Toronto Argonauts and, in 2020, the Edmonton Eskimos. The Colts promoted Brady to OC last week.
  • Long-term extension of the NFL Keenan McCardell will resurface in Minnesota. He Vikings hire McCardell as receiver coach, according to Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union (on Twitter). In 2010, McCardell was Jacksonville receiver coach during the 2017-2020 period. Doug Brown.
  • Ex-Colts DC Ted Monachino will be the Falcons‘offline defense coach Arthur Smith next season. Monachino, Indy DC from 2016-17, spent the last two years with the Bears. The Falcons also hired Jon Hoke to train defensive backs. Maryland’s older brother HC Brady Hoke, Jon was Terrapins ’defensive coordinator during 2019-20, but has been the NFL’s DB coach for several seasons.
