German man accused of posing as an air traffic controller

A lover of transistor radio was arrested for posing as an air traffic controller in Germany.

The 32-year-old Berlin man was arrested Thursday night after police said he contacted air traffic and gave false flight orders.

One of the planes he illegally contacted was a police helicopter that was sent to his neighborhood as part of a police raid to capture him, according to German officials.

During a search of the suspect’s apartment, police found two radios transmitting at the frequencies needed to make contact with the plane.

“For anyone who has been asking about our police helicopter operations in Koepenick, an unusual arrest,” Berlin Police he tweeted.

The suspect – whose name has not been released – is accused of having contacted state and federal helicopters, as well as passenger and transport planes for a period of six months.

The man had become increasingly professional with his communications, but gave “potentially dangerous” instructions. Fortunately, his crimes did not result in any incident or accident.
