A section of California’s famous Highway 1 has closed after collapsing amid torrential rain storms Friday.
According to a report, the scenic cliff road is closed for 20 miles in both directions south of Big Sur.
A California Department of Transportation spokesman described the damage, which has washed away part of the road, as “slipping.”
“It’s where we lost a portion of the freeway and now we’re facing a project to clean up and repair that stretch,” Jim Shivers told the San Francisco Chronicle, adding that maintenance equipment has been sent to the freeway for explore more damage.
Photos of the road show much of the missing path. Shivers said he could not estimate when the road would be reopened as engineers are still assessing the damage.
