A store employee shot while chasing a suspected shoplifter near 32nd Street and Indian School Road

PHOENIX – Phoenix police department is investigating a shooting at a business near 32nd Street and Indian School Road.

Just after 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, police responded to a mall to report a shooting.

Officers who responded to the scene said ABC15 shots were fired outside Howard’s Ace hardware store during an attempted robbery.

Phoenix police said an employee was trying to stop a thief while they were both running out of the store.

A man, who was outside, witnessed the chase and unloaded a gun. Police said he shot the thief but lost and hit the employee.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is said to have serious injuries but is not life threatening.

The thief left the scene before police arrived. It is unclear if they have identified him.

The person who shot remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. It is unclear whether charges will be filed.

The investigation is ongoing.
