With heavy snow in New Jersey, residents were urged to stay home

NEW JERSEY (WABC) – New Jersey is being hit by a storm that could throw well over a foot of snow in many areas when it does, creating snowstorm-like conditions and causing travel problems over the next few days.

Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency. State offices are closed for Monday.

Murphy also announced that all NJ TRANSIT buses, rail (except the Atlantic City rail line), light rail, and Access Link service will be temporarily shut down throughout the system throughout the day of service.

In addition, the six megapages of COVID-19 vaccine will close on Monday. All appointments will be rescheduled within the week. The vaccine call center will remain open to reschedule current appointments for the first and second doses: 855-568-0545

Department of Transportation Commissioner (NJDOT) Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti has issued a travel restriction for commercial vehicles on several interstate highways in New Jersey, according to the forecast for heavy snowfall and strong winds.

Travel restrictions are being coordinated with neighboring states.

In addition to trade restrictions, all motorists are advised to stay off-road.

There are cracks and accidents on major highways.

Although plows and salt spreaders have started to work, the roads are still treacherous and will only get worse.

“Collaborate with us. Stay off the roads. Stay home. You don’t have to go out. If you have to go out, call us, we’ll try to help you if we can,” the county sheriff said. Essex. “We prepare for the worst, we don’t even expect the best. We prepare for the worst.”

The restriction on the movement of commercial vehicles that began on Sunday at noon will be in force during the storm on the following motorways in both directions:
I-76, from Walt Whitman Bridge (Pennsylvania border) to NJ Route 42
I-78, from the Pennsylvania border to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
I-80, from the Pennsylvania border to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
I-195, from I-295 to NJ Route 138
I-280, from I-80 to I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike)
I-287, from NJ Route 440 to the New York State border
I-295, from Delaware Memorial Bridge to Scudders Falls (Pennsylvania border)
I-676, from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge (bordering Pennsylvania) to I-76
NJ Route 440, from Outerbridge Crossing to I-287
The travel restriction for commercial vehicles applies to:
All tractor trailers (exceptions listed in the administrative order)
Empty CDL weighted straight trucks
Passenger vehicles removing trailers
Recreational vehicles

Motorcycles
This restriction does NOT apply to:
The New Jersey Highway
The Garden State Parkway
The Atlantic City Freeway
Public safety vehicles, public safety jurors and civilians; as well as other personnel who directly support critical health facilities or infrastructure such as the supply of fuel or food. For a complete list of operations or personnel that are exempt from the travel ban, see the administrative order.

It is recommended for trucks that are already in New Jersey when travel restrictions apply to truck stops to wait for the storm. DO NOT PARK ON THE SHOULDERS.

If you see crews on the roads, please stay behind and don’t pass them. They are clearing the roads for your safety. If you are driving, NJDOT advises motorists to:
Get out early and allow extra time
Make sure the vehicle is fully powered
REDUCES SPEED and meets published speed limits
Leave a safe distance between vehicles
Be careful on bridges and ramps
ALWAYS BE CLEAR about plow and spread trucks. If they are behind you, let them pass
DO NOT pass between trucks that are in a plow formation
If you drive and road conditions deteriorate, TURN IT OFF somewhere safe and wait for it
Be patient and be careful
Keep an emergency kit in your car with a cell phone charger, water, snacks and other items. See the NJ Office of Emergency Management website for more information.

Motorists are encouraged to consult the NJDOT traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
