Will Smith presents the trailer for the Netflix series Amend: The Fight For America on the 14th Amendment

Will Smith took to Instagram on Tuesday to present a trailer for his new Netflix series Amend: The Fight For America.

The 52-year-old executive actor produced and hosted the six-part docuseries examined by the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which was ratified in 1868.

“What does it mean to be American?” Smith said to open the nearly three-minute trailer.

Back then, the video showed all-American footage, such as an apple pie and a baseball stadium full of fans for the 2010 opening day.

“What about a citizen?” Smith reflected.

Scholars argued how the original U.S. Constitution did not have a statement of who is and who is not a citizen, which allowed racism to thrive.

“The heart of the Fourteenth Amendment is the definition of citizens in America. It is through this definition that all the rights we love are granted and defended,” Smith said.

He later added: “The Fourteenth Amendment is a promise of equality for all. He says we all deserve empathy and dignity.”

The documentary features stars such as Mahershala Ali, Diane Lane, Samuel L. Jackson, Pedro Pascal, Yara Shahidi, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Laverne Cox reciting speeches and writings related to the Fourteenth Amendment.

Larry Wilmore, 59, was also an executive producer and also appears in front of the camera.

Smith, on his Instagram page, told his nearly 51.3 million followers that he had the honor of presenting the trailer.

“We live unprecedented days as a society, as a country and as a human family. I believe that cultivating personal and historical understanding is the imperative spark that ignites the flames of compassion and healing they desperately needed, ”the Oscar nominee wrote in the coach’s title.

As Americans, we seek to form a more perfect union that truly establishes justice and equality for all. I think a deeper understanding of the 14th Amendment is a critical point, “Smith added.

“Our hope with this series is to illuminate the beauty that is America’s promise and share a message of connection and shared humanity so that we can better understand and celebrate our different experiences as Americans and promote the progress towards true equality promised to all people according to the 14th Amendment.
