There have been no “red flags” on the more than 10,000 pregnant women who have received vaccines against Covid-19 so far, White House health adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Pregnant women and young children were excluded from the original U.S. clinical trials on vaccines, as is typical in experimental vaccine research. This has raised some concerns that there is not enough data to make sure vaccines are safe among pregnant women, but Fauci said the Food and Drug Administration has yet to see reasons to worry.
“The FDA, as part of the typical follow – up you have after the initial publication of any [emergency use authorization] we’ve found it, so far, and we have to be careful, but so far, there are no red flags on that, on pregnant women, ”Fauci said Wednesday in an interview with Dr. Howard Bauchner of The Journal of the American Medical Association.
Since the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines were authorized in December, more than 10,000 pregnant women, many of them health workers, have been shot, Fauci said. He noted that there is evidence that a coronavirus infection can lead to an increased risk of an adverse outcome during pregnancy, which is why many pregnant health workers decided to get the vaccine.
