Cruz’s blockade comes after more than a week of criticism of Raimondo’s comments about Huawei during his confirmation hearing from House and Senate Republicans about Raimondo’s comments.
The Commerce Department, under the Trump administration, added Huawei, one of the world’s largest 5G equipment manufacturers, to its “entity list,” which it effectively blacklisted the company for. concerns posed by a threat of espionage due to ties to the Chinese government.
Raimondo made it clear that, if confirmed, she “would review the policy, consult with you, consult with the industry, consult with our allies and make an assessment of what is best for national and national economic security,” but she did not specifically commit to keeping Huawei in the list of entities when Cruz questioned her about it during her confirmation hearing.
He later made it clear to written answers to questions from members of the Senate Trade Committee that he had “no reason to believe that the entities on these lists should not be there.”
Cruz voted against approving Raimondo during the committee vote Wednesday, and Raimondo advanced outside the committee by a vote of 21-3.
