COVID-19 vaccine appointments are available for local residents 75 years of age or older, as well as for health care workers, but each provider has their own registration system.
The Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health oversees distribution to hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and their own vaccination sites, while federal pharmacy collaboration programs provide vaccine doses to specialty nursing facilities. and assisted living.
There is a limited supply of vaccine doses nationwide and worldwide, and public health officials expect more deliveries in the coming months, especially as more vaccines are approved.
At present, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are being distributed in the county and need two doses (of the same type) to be fully effective.
According to county officials, everyone should get their second dose in the same place as the first.
There are about 36,000 people who are 75 or older, so it will take weeks to get enough doses (two per person) to vaccinate anyone who wants to. Health workers are also being vaccinated and an estimated 26,000 people in the county are in this group.
As of Wednesday, the county was receiving about 6,000 weekly doses of vaccines, with about 51,000 received so far. December deliveries were larger and were reserved primarily for front-line health workers.
