This week we received some data on Nintendo’s recent financial results. Following the release of the nine-month 2020 figures on Monday, the question and answer session between Nintendo President Shuntaro Furakawa and numerous investors has also been released.
It has presented several points of interest, that is, when we can expect to see the next Nintendo games, and an investor believes that with about 80 million units sold so far, the Switch could surpass the lifetime sales of the Nintendo Wii at over 101 million.
Asked what Nintendo will do to further boost Switch sales, Furukawa begins by quoting Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ success in getting people interested, along with nostalgia for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.
Going further, he also detailed the demand for various consoles within a family, confirming:
Our research has shown that approximately 20% of Nintendo Switch family sales between October and December 2020 in major regions are due to demand for multiple systems within the same family. We will try to continue to increase our sales volume by responding rigorously to this type of demand for multiple systems as well.
While stocks have improved in recent times, Switch consoles were remarkably hard to find during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, a situation that caused some retailers to inflate prices. It’s nice to see then that Nintendo is not only aware of the demand, but will try to “rigorously” meet it.
