Xiaomi has announced a new phone concept with a screen that curves around the four sides of the device, with no space for ports or buttons.
The “four-curve cascade screen” refers to the phone that has 88-degree “cascade” curves not only on the left and right sides of the device, but also on the top and bottom of the phone. As described in the press release:
The 88 ° hyperquatricular screen design allows visual interfaces to flow over the surface of the phone like water. Almost the entire frame of the smartphone is covered by screen, while the body does not carry ports or buttons, which advances the futuristic design without unibody port.
The sum of the total effect seems to include touch controls based on the display on the sides and scrolling content that, when viewed at eye level, appears to be dribble beyond the bottom of the screen. Based on the promotional material, the corners of the device do not have the “waterfall” effect, but have rounded cuts that have no display function.
Xiaomi says the concept aims to “extend the boundaries of the screen to infinity” and perform “a true design of a portless body.” This feat is said to be the result of “countless advances in glass laminating and folding technology” and “an innovative screen stacking design adopted through our innovative 3D connection process.”
Thanks to 46 patented technologies developed by themselves, physical ports and buttons can replicate their functions through more elegant alternatives. Innovative technologies and engineering solutions, including ultra-thin piezoelectric ceramics, first-class flexible film display acoustic technology, third-generation sub-expressive cameras, wireless charging, eSIM chips, pressure-sensitive touch sensors, and much more, they integrate seamlessly, forming a visionary but intuitive device.
It’s worth mentioning that while it’s called a concept phone, Xiaomi has said so The Verge that the device actually exists and is in fact reassuring that “they have used it themselves.”
Xiaomi’s recent decision to send upcoming smartphones without a charger and the recently announced “Mi Air Charge” wireless technology would seem to make more sense given the lack of ports on this device.
That said, who knows if it will ever hit the market. Xiaomi’s 2019 Mi Mix Alpha phone had a screen that surrounded almost the entire device and has also not been commercially available.
