The first pediatric death from COVID-19 in San Diego County was confirmed Friday by the Human Services and Health Agency (HHSA). The patient was a 10-year-old boy with underlying diseases.
His death was characterized as “another sad milestone” amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 450,000 people in the United States, 43,000 in California and 2,700 in San Diego County.
“Our deepest condolences to this child’s family and friends,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health official. “The death of this boy reminds us that this pandemic affects all members of our community, regardless of age, and we must do everything we can to protect each other and curb the spread of the virus.”
The county has only reported two COVID-19-related deaths affecting patients between the ages of 10 and 19 and none between the ages of 0 and 9. These two deaths account for approximately 1% of the county’s total of 2,777 deaths.
