Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman uttered a poem before Super Bowl LV in honor of three “community heroes” chosen by the NFL to serve as honorary captains in the championship game.
Her poem paid tribute to educator Trimaine Davis, nurse manager Suzie Dorner and Marine Corps veteran James Martin.
Read a transcript of his observations below:
Today we pay tribute to our captains
For its actions and impact a
A moment of uncertainty and need.
They have taken the initiative,
Exceeding all expectations and limitations,
Raise your communities and neighbors
As leaders, healers and educators.
James has felt the wounds of war,
But this warrior still shares
His house with children at risk.
During Covid, he has even given a hand
Live football for family and fans.
Trimaine is an educator who works non-stop,
Provide points of interest to your community,
Laptops and technology workshops,
Thus, their students have all the tools
They must be successful in life and at school.
Suzie is the ICU nursing manager at a Tampa hospital.
His chronicles show that even in tragedy, hope is possible.
He lost his grandmothers due to the pandemic,
And fight to save other lives in the UCI battle zone,
Define the frontline heroes who risk their lives for ours.
We walk with these warriors,
Upload these champions,
And carry on the call of our captains!
We celebrate them by acting
With courage and compassion,
Doing what is right and just.
While we honor them today,
They are the ones who honor us every day.
