Man killed in blast in baby shower identified as 26-year-old Hartland resident

Gaines Township, Mich. – Police have identified the 26-year-old man who died Sunday after a new cannon exploded in Gaines Township, southwest of Flint.

According to authorities, Evan Thomas Silva was hit by shrapnel when the cannon exploded. He was the only person affected.

Police said the cannon had no projectiles and was designed to create a loud flash, smoke and loud noise. She had been fired several times before the baby shower without any problems.

Police believe the gunpowder that was loaded into the device caused the fracture and shrapnel to spread through the area.

Silva was seriously injured and was rushed to Hurley Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
