ESPN journalist Pedro Gomez died Sunday at the age of 58.
Gomez covered baseball for ESPN for more than 30 years, making regular reports and appearances on star programs such as “Baseball Tonight,” “Sunday Night Baseball” and “SportsCenter.”
“We are shocked and saddened to learn that our friend and colleague Pedro Gomez is dead,” ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro said in a statement. “Pedro was an elite journalist at the highest level and his professional achievements are universally recognized. Most importantly, Pedro was a kind and dear friend to all of us. Our heart is with Pedro’s family and all those who they love him at this extraordinarily difficult time. “
The sports network noted that Gomez leaves behind a woman, Sandra; children, Rio and Dante; and daughter, Sierra.
Rio Gómez is a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox farming system.
“Our heart goes out to the Gomez family,” the Red Sox said in a tweet Sunday evening.
Pedro Gómez’s parents emigrated to Cuba before he was born, and he was part of the ESPN team that covered a game between the Tampa Bay radios and the Cuban national team in Havana in 2016. Gómez returned the ashes of his father and brother in the family home, the net. reported.
He was based on the West Coast and was well known for his coverage of Barry Bonds’ research in the home race record from 2004 to 2007.
Sunday night was given condolences to Gomez from around the baseball world.
