So far it has been a low quarterback season for the NFL, which has featured rumors of trades or real trades with well-known quarterbacks such as Deshaun Watson and Matthew Stafford.
The latest quarterback in the spotlight is Carson Wentz of Philadelphia, who is expected to be replaced soon after a fall. And, as expected, the Chicago Bears have been involved in all of these discussions. This is what happens when your CEO and head coach have one more year to fix a ten-decade quarterback problem with this franchise.
There are rumors flying everywhere regarding the Bears and Wentz that it’s hard to know what to believe. But that’s true, according to trusted sources across the league: The Bears are very interested in negotiating with Wentz.
Mike Garafolo, of the NFL Network, stressed both, though he was also quick to point out that any operation doesn’t seem imminent. Garafolo said the Eagles and the two top contenders for Wentz in the Bears and Indianapolis Colts are “playing poker.” Essentially, Philadelphia awaits an offer they like as Chicago and Indianapolis explore their options.
Recently, the Bears promoted quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo to become the game’s coordinator, who almost feels like a prelude to Wentz’s potential landing in Chicago. DeFilippo coached Wentz during his first two seasons in the league, which included his MVP career in 2017.
It’s no coincidence that the Bears and Colts are the two teams that show the most interest, as they have a coach who worked with Wentz during his impressive second season at DeFilippo and Colts head coach Frank Reich.
While the Bears, like the rest of the league, hold out hope that the Houston Texans will give in and change Watson, this is a dream right now. So with limited options and the 20th overall selection, Wentz could be the best option right now, of course, at the right price.
