NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – An investigation is underway after an elderly man died shortly after receiving a vaccine against COVID at the Javits Center.
State health officials say a 70-year-old man (whose name has not been released) collapsed 25 minutes after being shot and died at the hospital Sunday morning, it reported. Aundrea Cline-Thomas of CBS2.
In a statement, the state health commissioner said, during the 15-minute observation period after receiving the vaccine, “… he had no adverse reactions or any anxiety.”
VACCINE AGAINST COVID
“Until we know more about the detailed medical history of this patient, or one or two others who have experienced something similar, we won’t really know what caused it,” said Dr. Max Gomez of CBS2.
State health officials do not believe the man had an allergic reaction, a rare but possible side effect. According to the CDC, out of nearly 4.1 million doses administered of the Modern vaccine from December 21 to January 10, 10 allergic reactions and no deaths were reported.
“It simply came to our notice then. I mean, we have vaccinated many millions of people around the world with very few adverse side effects, compared to the possibility of getting COVID, ”said Gómez.
CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
That is why the medical community defends the safety of the vaccine. To date, nearly one million people in New York City have been vaccinated.
The forensic doctor is investigating how this man died, but it is too early to relate the vaccine to the patient’s death.
Vaccination sites against COVID, including the Javits Center, remain open throughout the city. Medical professionals say that the possibility of obtaining COVID poses an even greater threat.
