This water, however
I don’t think I can accurately assess how many times I’ve played Mario 64. Whether it’s the original hardware, the DS or various collections / virtual consoles, all levels burn my brain. But not quite like that.
In the provocatively called video “I bought a $ 1,500 GPU (an RTX 3090) to play Super Mario 64 with RTX,” YouTuber Dario appears Mario 64 with ray tracing. Now, this video showing Wet-Dry World is a bit old, but it represents an ongoing project that could finally see the light of day.
As much as time tries to keep the classics low, it’s a losing battle. People will retain water for these types of games forever, and I have to say that it is wonderful to see the wonderful level designs of the game preserved like this a million times.
Of course, the community is very polarized as to how much ray tracing effects actually add to the game. It’s a bit more advanced than many other mod projects over the years (which “improve” the look of Mario 64), but I find it fantastic. A wide range of projects is never bad.
